Sean Scullion is flying to Haiti to assist with the rebuilding of a devastated orphanage.

The Danthor Foundation orphanage in Jacmel was largely destroyed in the January 13 earthquake.

Earthquake damage in Jacmel

Mr Scullion, actor, activist and author, expressed his concern on Radio Reverb on Sunday:

“I’m really distressed by the images of children adrift in the streets of Haiti.

“I’m just so glad to be able to go out there to help.”

Brighton based author Sean Scullion: hoping to help.

Mr Scullion has booked his flight for March 8. He is now busy raising funds for the trip:

“I urge you to donate food and clothing. You’ll be doing a wonderful thing.

“I’ve heard that some Christian groups are refusing to help Haitians because of their cultural association with voodoo. That’s one reason why I’m going.”

Haitian rescue and road clearance efforts underway

Pat Robertson, US televangelist, recently blamed the quake upon Haiti having made a “pact with the devil” 200 years ago to defeat its then French colonists.

To blame voodoo or God for a natural disaster is “theological nonsense” insists Father Reginald Jean-Marie of Notre-Dame, the largest Roman Catholic church in Miami’s Little Haiti.

He urges support for Haitians:

“Any system of belief that people cling to especially in a time of crisis can be of help to them.”

Mr Scullion plans to report on the situation via his blog.
